With over 3000 km of coastline, it is easy to see why fishing is an integral part of rural life in Vietnam. From commercial trawlers to the father and son fishing on the banks of a pond, fishing is firmly woven into the Vietnamese culture and economy.

Day's Catch

These fishermen submerge giant nets that are tethered to bamboo poles and pulleys. When they go to collect the fish, they wear smooth metal hats that slide under the nets in order to ease their movements and still shade them from the harsh sun.

It is believed that the origin of the idea of these basket boats was born out of ingenuity and necessity during the French colonial era. When the French levied taxes on boats in Vietnam, fishermen couldn’t afford to pay them – so they designed circular woven “baskets” that just so happen to also function as boats.
