Religion

I was born into the Jewish faith. My mother converted to Judaism when she married my father and I was bar mitzvahed in Nairobi Kenya when I was 13. Unfortunately, I became less practicing as I grew older, blaming it on the fact that I lived in countries where there was not a large presence of Jews (Spain, Puerto Rico).

Bamboo, a perfect combination of strength and flexibility, has come to represent harmony and balance in one’s life.  In many ways, I see parallels between the importance of strength and balance found in bamboo and in the Buddhist religion.

Ghost Festival

The Ghost Festival,  is a traditional Buddhist and Taoist festival held on the 15th night of the seventh month. On this day it is believed that ghosts and spirits, including those of deceased ancestors, come out from the “lower realm”. Activities during the ceremony would include preparing ritualistic food offerings, burning incense, and burning papier-mâché replicas of material items such as clothes, gold and other fine goods for the visiting spirits of the ancestors.

"Religion" Continued

But the truth is that organized religion has never been a priority for me. I am not the type to go to church/temple every week. I did, however, grow up very spiritual believing that it is important to be a good human being. Even though my mother converted to Judaism, she has still  been a practicing Buddhist and those influences did rub off on me. Although hardly religious, religion as an art and its intellectual elements have been of great interest to me throughout my life.

Here is a collection of religiously themed images from Vietnam.  Officially, Vietnam is an atheist state. Despite this, many of its citizens are religious. The three main religions are Buddhism, Confucianism and Catholicism.
